This site will primarily be things Amy cooks, but Z.A.C. and That Guy are likely to throw things in the mix on occasion. Super Hippie Team Panda Bear may bring the vegan at some point and El1x3r may talk about eating like a caveman. Pimp Salad can cook, but if she tries to tell you about her tequila lime chicken... run. We are also going to share our thoughts on places we eat if they are markedly better than average or notably bad. Stay tuned!

Trendy Hippie Food
Kombucha (slightly blurry sorry) a word that this spellchecker doesn't believe is real...it's a fermented drink that has tiny jellyfish-like creatures called 'mothers' floating in it and has other live ingredients. It's supposed to aid digestion and be super healthful. I've just noticed that everyone in Eugene seems to drink this stuff like water, so I tried it. The taste isn't horrible, especially if you like a little vinegar flavor but the little jellyfishes were too much to take! they're soooo gross! I don't know if you all can even find this in good old TX but if you can give it a try, you might get hooked. And for the home fermenter-you can brew this stuff at home!
Second Culinary delight...Kale Krunch. it is basically dried Kale leaves (kale is a green lettuce like veggie but contains more vitamins and is a very deep green. It grows well in the more northern climes) that are sprinkled with flavored Yeast. There is no actually cheese involved in making them and I think they are actually really good. They have spicy varieties too! I know for a fact that central market sells these in Dallas so go get yourself some and replace those nasty potato chips with something yummy and healthy. :)

I'm pretty sure I fermented little jellyfish in a travel mug I left in my car once ;) Do they swim around in the drink? Can feel them when you drink it? I need more details!
ReplyDeletethey float around the drink and if you warmed it up they might swim, they are more like algae than actual jellyfish, yes you can feel them when you drink it and some of them that you find in drinks the size of a snapple bottle can have tops with the diameter of a nickel; I heard once that one of them had a top the same size as a baseball!
DeleteI REALLY want to see what the jellyfish drink looks like. I'm not sure I could make myself drink it, though, knowing it tasted like vinegar. Also, the kale thing... maybe not so much. I don't much care for kale even fresh in a salad, though I don't really consider it offensive. I do like dried seaweed and kelp from the asian markets. How similar is it to that?
ReplyDeleteYou can always strain the Jellyfish and it's babies out technically the jellyfish are called "Mothers" and the sediment at the bottom of the drink are it's eggs which give off the fermentation and the vinegar-esque flavor. The texture of the kale is alot like dried seaweed but it doesn't have that oceany taste, it kinda tastes like whatever flavor it's labeled as. You won't know how much you hate/love it till you try. :)
